Linux Applications are Scaling Better than Ever!
Tilera's Multicore Development Environment and TILEPro Processors scale Linux applications up to 64 cores
nProbe, an open source networking monitoring application, scaling up to 10Gbps linearly using Tilera MDE 2.0
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 6, 2009 - Tilera® Corporation, developer of the breakthrough TILE™ family of high-performance processors for the embedded market, today announced the release of its Multicore Development Environment™ (MDE) version 2.0. MDE 2.0 supports the new TILEPro™ processor family with enhanced hardware for multi-threaded, shared-memory applications. Operating systems, compilers, and other development tools have all been enhanced to support TILEPro features, as well as continuing to fully support the TILE64™ processor. With the TILEPro processors and the new MDE features like Zero Overhead Linux (ZOL™) and Bare Metal Environment (BME), users are able to linearly scale their Linux and real-time dataplane applications to unprecedented performance.
MDE 2.0 supports a complete range of run-time environments, from a Bare Metal Environment (BME) suitable for RTOS porting and low-level dataplane applications to a full-featured Linux environment. Providing the best of both worlds, Tilera's Zero-Overhead Linux (ZOL) extends the "tickless kernel" feature of Linux 2.6.26 to eliminate timer ticks and other Linux overhead from real-time applications, offering significantly improved real-time responsiveness and determinacy. For applications requiring direct access to hardware and a minimal software stack, Tilera provides the Bare Metal Environment. Developers can also mix-and-match, configuring hybrid systems that consolidate control-plane components on a set of cores running Linux, while dataplane components running either Linux in ZOL mode or BME.
“MDE 2.0 in combination with the new TILEPro family of processors enables our customers to double, and in some cases quadruple their application performance, as compared to other solutions,” said Troy Bailey, V.P. of Marketing, Tilera Corporation. “With these products, Tilera is well positioned to provide the highest performance applications across many embedded markets including L4-7 network processing, cloud computing, audio/video processing and conferencing, and wireless infrastructure.”
MDE 2.0 also offers a variety of new features including, higher-level programming models, such as Erlang, and Boost C++ libraries; new device drivers, support for JumpGen Systems TxM-100 AMC platforms; and Tile Multicore Components (TMC™) libraries - a set of user libraries for parallel programming and performance tuning providing developers the ability to maximize their application performance.
